Which infrastructures for the energy transition?
There is a consensus on the need to drastically reduce the share of fossil fuels in global energy consumption. Nevertheless, the relevant infrastructure mix to support the new low-carbon world has yet to be defined. Should we get rid of the long-lived, capital-intensive assets that were designed for the fossil-fuels (e.g., pipelines, refineries, airports, highways, etc.) and replace them with new hydrogen pipelines, new energy grid and railways? Or could the existing infrastructure be transformed so as to serve as a driver for the energy transition? Would such investments be worth it? What would be the best infrastructure mix?
